150-Room Five-Star Hotel to Strengthen Premium Hospitality in the Eastern Himalayas
Hyatt Hotels Corporation has formally commenced development of Hyatt Regency Gangtok, a 150-room luxury hotel set to significantly enhance Sikkim’s premium tourism, destination wedding, and MICE landscape. The foundation stone was laid by Prem Singh Tamang, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, at a ceremony held in Gangtok.
The project marks a strategic milestone in positioning Gangtok as a high-value tourism and events destination in the Eastern Himalayas, while reinforcing global hotel brands’ confidence in Sikkim’s long-term growth potential.
Tourism-Led Growth Strategy for Sikkim
Tourism continues to be a cornerstone of Sikkim’s economy, supporting livelihoods across hospitality, transport, handicrafts, and allied sectors. Gangtok recorded over 17 lakh tourist arrivals in 2025, including more than 71,000 international visitors, highlighting sustained growth driven by improved connectivity and renewed travel demand.
Despite rising visitation, the city’s premium hotel inventory remains limited. The addition of a centrally located Hyatt Regency is expected to address this demand-supply gap and attract higher-spending domestic and international travellers.
Hyatt Regency Gangtok: Project Scope and Amenities
The hotel will be developed on a 3.27-acre master-planned site and is designed to offer a comprehensive luxury hospitality experience. Planned features include:
-
150 guest rooms and suites
-
Multiple dining venues, including an all-day dining restaurant and specialty outlets
-
Spa, fitness centre, and outdoor pool
-
Regency Club lounge and family activity zones
-
Approximately 13,000 sq. ft. of flexible meeting and event space
-
Licensed casino facility
The extensive events infrastructure positions the hotel as a future hub for destination weddings, corporate conferences, exhibitions, and social gatherings in the region.
Development Partners and Vision
The project is being developed by Gyalshing Hotels Private Limited, a special purpose vehicle under SM Hotels and Resorts Pvt Ltd, the hospitality arm of SM Developers. Designed by SCSY Studio, Singapore, the hotel aims to blend experiential luxury with regional character, incorporating local art, cuisine, and talent into the guest experience.
Boosting Employment and Local Economy
Beyond strengthening Gangtok’s hospitality offering, the Hyatt Regency development is expected to generate direct and indirect employment, enhance local supply chains, and support sustainable tourism growth. The project aligns with Sikkim’s broader vision of responsible, high-value tourism that balances economic development with cultural preservation.
