Carnival Cruise Line confirmed that it will offer Alaska sailings on the Carnival Miracle beginning July 27 to passengers with Covid-19 vaccinations.

The brand has only mandated vaccines for the Miracle so far and said it plans to finalize its protocols next week for cruises on the Carnival Horizon from Miami and the Carnival Vista and Carnival Breeze from Galveston, Texas, in July.

Earlier this month, Carnival opened the books on late July Alaska sailings, a move followed by its sister brands, Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, who cited yesterday's passage of Alaska Tourism Restoration Act in both the House and Senate and recent guidance from the CDC. All three lines plan a partial season of Alaska sailings from Seattle open only to vaccinated guests.

The Miracle will assume some of what had been the Carnival Freedom's departures from Seattle. It will offer seven, seven-day cruises calling in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan as well as scenic cruising in Tracy Arm Fjord.

Carnival has several times over the past few months resisted making any decisions about vaccine mandates. Its president, Christine Duffy, recently told "NBC Nightly News" anchor Lester Holt that the large portion of families who sail with the line makes it hard to implement a vaccine mandate.

"Children under 12 are a big part of the cruise experience in a family vacation in the summer, and as it stands right now, we wouldn't be able to have kids under 12 onboard," Duffy said.

In the same interview, Duffy questioned why cruise lines should implement vaccine requirements for passengers when other areas of travel and leisure are open without them.

Holland America's other ship with a specific departure this summer -- the Eurodam, which sails from Athens in August -- also has a vaccine mandate.
