Designed by Woods Bagot with interiors by Hecker Guthrie, The Standard, Fitzroy will celebrate the Melbourne suburb’s rich culture and history across its 127 rooms and public spaces..

Private Melbourne developer DealCorp has entered into a partnership that will see The Standard open its inaugural Australian location in the city’s Fitzroy neighbourhood.

The Standard heads down under

A newbuild project worth in excess of AUS$60 million, this hotel on Rose Street will integrate the architectural design of Woods Bagot with the interior expertise of Hecker Guthrie. The exciting scheme, which follows DealCorp’s purchase of the site in 2018 and the 2019 approval of a hotel permit, is expected to complete in 2023.

On opening, The Standard, Fitzroy will house 127 guestrooms across seven levels, along with a rooftop venue. The brand’s distinctive hospitality, design and culinary and cultural experiences promise to make it the ideal fit for Fitzroy and its creative community.

“We couldn’t be happier to be bringing this iconic brand to Australian shores,” said David Kobritz, executive chairman of DealCorp. “With the country’s focus turning to a post-Covid era, this feels like a pivotal moment for hotel and travel. The Standard was a natural choice for our Rose Street hotel project. Not only are our brand values aligned, but they are the perfect operator to bring to a suburb like Fitzroy, which has such a rich culture and history.”

“The Fitzroy neighbourhood in Melbourne represents exciting new territory for The Standard, but at the same time feels totally familiar,” added Standard International CEO Amar Lalvani. “DealCorp’s commitment to making long-lasting contributions to its community is aligned with our own history of enhancing the neighbourhoods we become part of.”

Design inspired by the local area

Paying tribute to its setting, the hotel will take design cues from the area’s industrial heritage, while also being respectful of the residential surroundings.

“In designing this hotel, we designed it to be local – to continue the architectural traditions of Fitzroy and sustain the neighbourhood’s artistic and cultural spirit,” said Peter Miglis, principal and regional design leader for Woods Bagot in Australia and New Zealand. “Fitzroy’s history of corner pubs, workers cottages, grand housing and industry inspired our approach to the building’s façades. Weathered steel and concrete are robust, timeless materials that sit comfortably straight away and, over time, will add charm as they patina.”

“In looking to connect The Standard Hotel to its local surroundings, Hecker Guthrie has drawn from the breadth of Fitzroy’s historic past to underpin our approach to the interiors – to create spaces that bring together ideas of soft industrialism, youthful eclecticism with a sophisticated palette of materials,” added Josh Watt, Hecker Guthrie associate.

Other hotel schemes on Standard International’s development slate include properties in Bangkok, Singapore, Hua Hin, Lisbon, Milan and Chicago.
