At last count there were just over 2500 hotels catering to the staggering 300 million visitors that descend upon Shanghai every year.

It's perhaps understandable then that picking the perfect place to stay in the popular Chinese city can feel a little daunting.

But in a city that was recently dubbed Asia's version of New York, it's perhaps fitting to choose a hotel celebrated for its incredible nod to old-school glamour.

Step forward the Fairmont Peace Hotel, a 270-room hotel housed inside a remarkable 1930s Art Deco building on The Bund.

So, why should you book in? Well, let us tell you why…

Luxury steeped in history

If it's good enough for Charlie Chaplin then it's good enough for us, right? The Fairmont Peace Hotel might have opened back in 1929 but even to this day it's an iconic and remarkable landmark in the city of Shanghai.

The design of this original heritage building is flawless, oozing with Gatsby-style glamour that has guests feeling incredibly special from the moment they spin through one of the four vintage revolving doors. And bringing it into the 21st century, there's even a sky-lit swimming pool, the luxurious Willow Stream Spa (seriously, try the Rose Infinity facial!) and a fully-equipped gym.

A room with quite the view

Located on the breathtaking Shanghai waterfront – known as The Bund – the rooms at Fairmont Peace Hotel boast some seriously picture-perfect views. But we'll be honest, it's hard to peel your eyes from the grandeur inside.

Once you've taken the original antique elevator cage up to your room, it's all grey-vein marble, Noir St Laurent dark limestone and walnut burl grain woods, with a soft buff and blue colour palette. Simply stunning.

But breathe a sigh of relief as each room also boasts cutting-edge technology. There's a 40-inch digital TV, DVD player and wireless and Broadband Internet. Oh, and a rainforest shower in the marble-clad bathroom!

For those with deeper pockets perhaps book into one of the famous Nine Nations Suites, which pay homage to nine different nations, including India, England, Italy and Japan.

Come for the night, stay for the jazz

Look at any recommended list of things to do in Shanghai and you'll find The Jazz Bar, nestled neatly in the Fairmont Peace Hotel. In fact, it's been a must-visit institution since it opened back in the 1920s.

These days a jazz band kicks off each evening at 6.30pm, and the music and the classic cocktail list (a Manhattan, anyone?) always attracts quite the crowd. In fact, Bill and Hilary Clinton, Justin Trudeau and Barack Obama have all enjoyed some jazz here.

Feast on the fare and the views

There's something extra special about stepping out onto the ninth-floor terrace at the Fairmont Peace Hotel and soaking up the sweeping views of the Shanghai skyline and the Huangpu River from The Cathay Room.

It's undoubtedly a great spot for sunset, but every Sunday the champagne brunch is incredibly popular. There's grilled lobster, sirloin steak and silky eggs Benedict, to name a few, and bottle after bottle of champagne.

There's also plenty of other options at the Fairmont Peace Hotel. There's refined Shanghainese cuisine at Dragon Phoenix or sumptuous high tea at the ground-floor Jasmine Lounge. Oh and of course, those world-renowned cocktails at The Jazz Bar.

Live it well while exploring stunning Shanghai.
