About Hong Kong

Satellite view is showing Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), located south of the Chinese Guangdong (formerly Canton) province. The area comprises Hong Kong Island, the Kowloon peninsula, and the New Territories,as well as some additional areas of the mainland.

Hong Kong was a former trading port, it became a crown colony of the United Kingdom in 1842, in 1997 its sovereignty was transfered to the People's Republic of China. The "One country, two systems" idea grants Hong Kong a high degree of autonomy in all areas with the exception of foreign affairs and defence. The SAR maintains its own currency, its legal and political system and other aspects that concern its way of life for at least 50 years until 2047.

The city is regarded as a cosmopolitan center where East meets West, it has become one of the world's major financial and manufacturing centers. Hong Kong has a population of more than 7 million inhabitants.

Official languages are Chinese and English.
