South Korean hotel chains and retailers are competing in the super-rich category against stagnating consumer demand.

Westin Chosun Hotel has arranged and already sold out 450 tickets of the annual live screening of the Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert. The tickets have sold out every year despite their rather hefty price tag of 500,000 won ($430), the hotel added.

Hotel Shilla said it has also sent out invites to VVIPs of its hotel and Shilla duty-free stores to its exclusive “winter delight party” next month.

Lotte Department Store recently invited some of its most valuable guests to enjoy fireworks at a luxury hotel suite near Gwangalli Beach in the southern port city of Busan, complete with a dinner and party. The event was marketed especially for its LENITH members, a prestige group of customers that spend more than 100 million won a year.

The department store also hosted a special party to give its top-tier members a sneak peek of the British premium homeware and furniture retailer The Conran Shop, which is expected to open its flagship store at Lotte’s Gangnam outlet on Thursday.

Hyundai Department Store runs an exclusive cultural program for its Jasmine Club members whose annual spend tops 40 million won. Dubbed “The Studio Class,” it offers cooking and various arts and crafts lessons from some of the country’s top chefs and artists.

Bernard Arnault, chairman of the French luxury house LVMH, the owner of Louis Vuitton, recently drew attention from local fashionistas when he visited Korea to host a special banquet for top customers at Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas Hotel.
