CHITOSE, Hokkaido -- A high-end hotel is set to open at the international terminal of New Chitose Airport on Feb. 1, aiming to attract guests including affluent inbound tourists visiting this northernmost prefecture.
Portom International Hokkaido is on the fourth through eighth floors of an eight-story building recently built on the south side of the airport's international terminal building. The premier suite costs 1 million yen per night, or about $9,170.
"We'd like to propose a variety of trips for visitors to Hokkaido, making the most of our location inside the airport," said Kiyoteru Tagashira, vice president of Hekiundo Hotels & Resorts Co., the Chitose-based operator of the hotel.
The hotel lobby exudes a calm, museum-like atmosphere and visitors can admire the traditional Japanese-style artworks decorating various spots. The hotel has 171 guest rooms, each measuring at least 43 square meters. The accommodation fees start from 80,000 yen per night, and the highest priced "Sukiya Suite" boasts a tatami matted space and a dining area within its 250 square meters of space. The bathrooms at the hotel use "onsen" hot spring water.
Guests can savor fine cuisine at the hotel's restaurants overseen by a celebrity chef and a venerable Kyoto restaurant. A tea room is set to open in March, while a cafe will be equipped with books in various languages on subjects related to Japan, Hokkaido and the native Ainu people.
