TOPHOTELCONSTRUCTION data shows 99 new projects will bring more than 11,000 new rooms to Switzerland.

Switzerland is considered one of the most stable hotel markets in the world and is known for its wide range of luxury hotels in popular tourist destinations.

We take a closer look at how the market will develop here in the near future.
Solid numbers for the coming years

For the next few years, 99 new projects will bring more than 11,000 new rooms to Switzerland.

After a quiet year in 2019 with only 9 openings, 2020 will be a more eventful year with 34 new launches. 2021 looks promising with 20 hotels in the pipeline.

There are only 5 projects in the works for 2022 so far, but this number will certainly increase over the next few years.
Top growth regions in Switzerland

Zurich will see the strongest growth with 9 new hotels and more than 1,200 additional rooms.

The capital city of Bern, Geneva and the popular tourist town of Grindelwald each get 5 new hotels. In Basel, 4 new properties with just under 600 rooms are to open.

The number of new rooms shows that the projects in Geneva are taking on larger dimensions than in other cities. On average, the new hotels there will have 159 rooms, which is well above the average of 98 rooms per project in Grindelwald.

Which brands are growing in Switzerland?

Switzerland’s major international groups are progressing very slowly over the next few years.

Accor‘s budget brand Ibis Styles and Marriott‘s design brand Moxy Hotels lead the pack by opening three hotels each.

The British group YOTEL is a new addition to the Swiss hotel market. With three opening properties in the Geneva region, the modern brand wants to convince guests of their so-called ‘long-stay pads’, a new take on extended-stay hotels.
Something for everyone

Among the 99 new hotels, 36 are in the 2- to 3-star category. The remaining 63 fall into the luxury segment of which the 43 4-star hotels make up the lion’s share.

This trend shows that Switzerland continues to be a market for high-quality hotels and a wealthy customer base.
