One of Brighton’s oldest seafront hotels could be set for a multi-million pound makeover if a refurbishment plan is given the green light.

The Old Ship in the city, which is owned by the Cairn Group, would be expanded with 54 new bedrooms, space for six shops lining the front and a swimming pool with retractable roof.

Plans also include a six-storey extension, a refresh of the bar and restaurant, a new health club and basement night venue.

Speaking to local press, the Cairn Group said that the overhaul was vital for the 17th century hotel’s future and would be good for Brighton’s economy.

Officials have recommended backing the plans when they go before Brighton and Hove City Council’s Planning Committee at Hove Town Hall next Wednesday.

If the plans are approved, Cairn will be asked to pay a “developer’s contribution” of more than £40,000 towards the council’s “Local Employment Scheme” and for public art.

The Old Ship Hotel is a locally listed heritage building in the Old Town Conservation Area, while the Assembly Rooms are Grade-II listed.

The site has had a hotel on it since at least 1559, when the Shippe Inn in Ship Street was recorded there.
